Growing up in Minnesota, Jason Newman converted to Islam as a teen. His love of hip-hop and work as an MC began soon after, and in 2000 he dropped ‘Rites of Passage,’ his first album as Brother Ali. His rhymes often have a social justice perspective. Tracks such as “Uncle Sam Goddamn” and “Mourning in America” reference everything from police brutality to military-industrial complex to religious prejudice. His latest album for Rhymesayers is ‘All The Beauty in This Whole Life,’ which features the track “Dear Black Son.” Ali hit Vevo to discuss his new music, the current state of politics in the US, and what prompted the writing of “Dear Black Son.”
