Principe Records - Blow Your Head Season 3

"one of the founding ideas of Blow Your Head is exploring how culture and location affects the music being made in that place. In all the places I have been to trying to document this, none is more unique than Principe Records label out of Lisbon. In 1974, Portugal overthrew a fascist dictator and became a democracy. This led to a sudden spike in immigration from the former Portuguese African colonies. The government made housing for all the new immigrants but left them outside the main part of the city with no easy way to access the city. That left the new African immigrants somewhat isolated from integrating with the rest of Lisbon. Their isolation from the rest of Lisbon coupled with the sounds they brought from Africa allowed them to form new genres all their own. The music of DJ Lilocox and DJ Marfox sounds African and European all at once." - Shane McCauley
